Letter to the Editor: School Choice

February 10, 2015
In The News

Dear Editor,

For more than twenty years, my father was heavily involved in the local public school system as a teacher, coach and principal. Like most families in the Second District, my parents struggled to get by; but, they always made sure that I attended the best possible school that fit my educational needs.

Last week, I proudly stood with my Congressional colleagues, Republican and Democrat, in recognizing National School Choice week. It’s imperative for Congress to help give parents the freedom to choose the best school and environment for their child to learn and grow.

According to a recent American Federation for Children poll, nearly 70 percent of Americans support the concept of school choice. Parents, in communities all across the country, are demanding more education options in order to help their children grow and succeed.

I strongly support the broadest school and educational choices possible for students and their parents. For example, some students prefer a traditional classroom while other students like a more hands-on approach. By having more school options, parents and students will be able to pick a school that best suits their learning needs and will help foster creativity and innovation.

I believe the best education is closest to home where kids can grow in our communities and use their education to help give back. A stronger and more educated community will help our economy grow and create more jobs.

As the State Treasurer, I oversaw the historic openings of Maine’s first two charter schools, Maine Academy of Natural Sciences (MeANS) and Cornville Regional Charter School. The addition of charter schools in Maine has allowed our students to pursue their dreams while receiving a great education.

As your representative in Congress, I will share the educational values of our Second District and continue to fight for more opportunities for our students so they may experience the way life should be.

Sincerely,

Bruce Poliquin

U.S. Member of Congress
